Level 1 Food Safety - Retail

Food handlers and their employers have a legal duty to manage food safety in accordance with EU and UK legislation. These laws require that any food prepared, cooked, served, or sold is safe for human consumption. Failure to follow food safety standards can lead to contamination, food poisoning, and potentially fatal consequences.
This Level 1 Food Safety – Retail course provides essential awareness training to help employees understand food safety risks, how they arise, and the basic controls required to prevent them. Delivered through an online learning system, the course supports staff induction by increasing awareness of good food safety practices within a retail environment.
Please note that this course is Level 1 in terms of subject knowledge only and does not lead to a formal Level 1 qualification.
Course Overview
This course covers the fundamental principles of food safety in a retail setting, including:
• Food safety legislation and legal responsibilities
• Common hazards from delivery through to food service
• Risk control and the prevention of contamination
• The role of pests, premises, and people in food safety
• A final assessment to test knowledge and understanding
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
• Identify the key legislation involved with food safety and its application to the retail environment
• Recognise hazards that can occur from delivery through to service of food and understand how to control them
• Understand the nature of microorganisms and their link to foodborne illness and food poisoning
• State the safety procedures used to control risk in the workplace
• Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of effective pest control
Who is this course for
This course is ideal for staff induction and is suitable for:
• New employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge
• Employees handling low-risk or wrapped foods (Category A)
• Front of house staff, such as checkout and service employees
• Back of house staff, including warehouse staff and stock handlers
