Nutrition and Hydration

If you are part of a team responsible for people’s nutrition and hydration, it’s important that you nderstand the terms that are being used, the nutritional requirements of the service users and the possible consequences of getting it wrong.
This course will start by defining the various terms used when talking about nutrition and hydration in care environments, the basic elements of nutrition and eating a healthy balanced diet, identify the reasons why vulnerable people might suffer with dehydration and the tools you can use to identify understand the terms that are being used, the nutritional requirements of the service users and the steps you can take to deal with this condition.
Course Overview
This CPD-approved course provides essential knowledge for those responsible for supporting nutrition and hydration in care settings. It begins by defining key terms used in nutrition and hydration and explains the basic elements of a healthy, balanced diet using the Eatwell Plate. Learners will explore the importance of hydration, the reasons why vulnerable individuals may be at risk of dehydration, and how nutritional needs change throughout life. The course also covers malnutrition and overnutrition, including how to identify individuals at risk using recognised screening tools and the steps that can be taken to support safe and effective nutritional care.

Recognise the importance of hydration and the risks of dehydration in vulnerable people.
Understand nutritional requirements at different stages of life.

Use the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) to identify individuals at risk.
Take appropriate action to support individuals with nutritional or hydration needs.
