Person-Centred Care

This course introduces learners to the principles and practical application of person-centred care within adult social care settings. Originating in the 1940s, person-centred care promotes a holistic approach that places the individual at the heart of all care and support decisions.

Learners will explore what person-centred care means in practice, the values that underpin it, and why it is central to current legislation and care standards. The course also provides practical guidance on implementing person-centred approaches through care planning, daily reporting, and obtaining informed consent. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding needed to deliver care that respects individuality, dignity, choice, and independence.

Course Overview

This course introduces learners to person-centred care and explains its importance in adult social care. It explores the origins and values of person-centred care, including dignity, respect, choice, and individuality, and explains why care and support should be tailored to each person.

Learners will gain an understanding of care plans, consent, and the involvement of service users in planning their care. The course also covers the purpose of daily reports, accurate record-keeping, and confidentiality.

Example care plans and a case study are used to help learners apply person-centred principles in practice and recognise good care delivery.
